A Good Laugh

Posted in Life As a Fashionista by skapla7 on December 23, 2009

After all the lugging around garment bags, running countless personal errands  for employers, and endless days as an unpaid intern I got much pleasure in reading about the latest intern scam.

Gawker reports, “Outrage at Grazia magazine after an intern sent out regularly to buy skinny lattes for the beauty desk announced at the end of her stint on the mag that she had in fact been buying them all full-fat ones.”

Winter Essentials

Posted in Life As a Fashionista, Trend Report: Top Picks by skapla7 on December 7, 2009

Winter is finally here! This weekend in New York we got our first sight of snow! Although I love the snow, it got me thinking about all the new pieces I will need in order to remain stylish in the frigid winter weather. Part of the commute to my internship at Pier 59 Studios includes a 15 minute walk from the subway station. I will need to stay bundled but do my very best at looking cute for work! Here are some items I have picked as key winter essentials.

Every NYC girl needs a pair of Women’s Hunter Original Tall Rain Boots. The ones I have selected are in a great color red, Merlot. I have these rain boots in a very nice light blue. Hunter also makes a great Fleece Welly Sock which can be inserted into the boot for comfort and warmth. The boots retail for approximately $115, the sock insert costs $30. These boots are definitely a season must have!

When it is really ice cold out, wear a pair of genuine leather gloves. They are so warm and stylish. This season, there are tons of leather gloves to choose from. The ones I have selected above are 3.1 Phillip Lim black studded leather gloves. They are a bit expensive but definitely a great investment! For an inexpensive alternative, check out the Portolano leather gloves I myself purchased for this season months ago. I have been dying to wear them already!

Invest in a sturdy leather bag this season. Marc Jacobs, my personal favorite, makes amazing black leather bags that are perfect for the winter. This Marc Jacobs Cecilia bag can dress up any casual outfit.

A wool dress is the perfect option for looking great and staying warm. This stripe dress from TopShop would look great with a pair of funky opaque tights. It is affordable, looks cozy, and is adorable.

Be sure to wear fur or faux fur in this winter weather. I have chosen a Karl Donoghue fur gilet.  Obviously, this is an expensive piece but don’t be afraid to wear faux fur this season.

Two main winter essentials are scarves and hats. I prefer knitted wool for both of these accessories. The more over-sized the scarf, the better. The scarf and hat I selected above are by Wool and the Gang.  They are expensive pieces but a great look. I am going to learn how to knit just so I can make the scarf!

Hope you enjoyed, XO

Dream Team Wednesdays

Posted in Life As a Fashionista by skapla7 on November 5, 2009

Over the last four months I have been interning at a top PR agency in NYC that represents the best of the best brands. I am surrounded by the most desired clothing, jewelry, and accessories in the industry. Brands that I would dream of wearing! But, I am only a very poor intern so it is far out of reach!

The day is filled with various tasks including compiling look-books, sending FedEx (most popularly to London and Milan),  keeping track of invoices, and checking in and returning merchandise.  But the most dreaded of them all,  the “runs” from photo shoots, to magazines, to showrooms, to designers, to stylists, to celebrities, and back (multiple times in one day). I have definitely kept in shape!

Although this may seem overwhelming I get to share these hectic days with the best crew! We call it ” Dream Team Wednesday’s” (well, because it is!). We are the best intern crew- dominating the copy room also known as our “office”. The majority, like myself, are recent college graduates or soon to be graduates struggling to find a full time job in the industry during a rough economic time.  We work so great together we could start our own business. Since we know the ins and outs so well it would for sure be amazing! (Just an idea guys!) Each time we are together we discuss our strategy for our nonexistent intern blog that has yet to hit the Web.  It would definitely be an entertaining read for all!

Today, all squished in our mini office we put together 4 boxes of clothing and shoes to be shipped to various locations spread from California to Milan in 10 minutes. (Record time, what TEAMWORK) The samples are treated like gold, because they are equivalent in value, are folded perfectly like gifts. Just in time for the FedEx delivery guy to show up for pickup.  A great dream team way to end a very hectic and stressful day, as always.

Below are some photos captured by a fellow intern for her school project on life as a NYC intern!

Fashion Frenzy, Zara.

Posted in Life As a Fashionista by skapla7 on October 8, 2009

Zara has always been one of my top five favorite stores. That is until recently when Zara made a VERY big screw up. Zara put a handbag on shelves that displayed a Nazi swastika. BBC reported that the handbag has been pulled from shelves and apparently the symbol went unnoticed.

Although this has gone on the last few weeks, I have only heard about it within the last week. As a young Jewish woman who shops very frequently at Zara I was shocked. I will definitely be hesitant in making future purchases. I hope it was a genuine mistake in design. Have a look for yourself at the handbag.

It’s all about Rachel Zoe! Each morning I look forward to reading, The Zoe Report. The Zoe Report has fashion tips or personal product picks by the genius herself. I recommend every fashion junkie to sign up @RachelZoe.com. Why not receive free fashion advice from the most well known and loved stylist?

I die” for all of her over-sized jewels and handbags! Zoe’s petite frame is always draped in gold, layers of bangles, enormous cocktail rings, and my personal favorite snake serpent rings & bracelets. Zoe gave a new meaning to wearing your grandmothers jewelry. Vintage is always the best way to go. I truly admire her style.  Here are some of my picks that reflect Zoe’s most recognizable style.

My favorite look of the collection

The PHI show took place in PHI’s very own in-house studio.  It had an industrial feel and an intimate setting. I would love to add these pants to my closet! I was lucky to snag a seat front row at this show!

My Favorite Look From Narciso Rodriguez

My Favorite Look From Narciso Rodriguez

I am in fashion week heaven! Last week, I dropped off a dress to Blake Lively herself. Tonight I attended my first fashion show and definitely an impressive one. I got to attend one of the best shows at Bryant Park, Narciso Rodriguez. The looks were perfect, an A+ in my book. I truly fell in love with every piece. Not only did I spot some very cool celebs including Jessica Alba & Courtney Love but I escorted Tory Burch to her perfect front row seat. I was definitely starstruck. Although, I have to say I am getting much better at keeping my cool in front of celebrities. As opposed to my encounter with Sarah Jessica Parker (my idol) last year when I could not even get a word out. I am making progress. As the end of fashion week is approaching, hopefully I will have some more stories! XO

the beginning

Posted in Life As a Fashionista by skapla7 on September 12, 2009

I have been meaning to start a blog for weeks. Primarily, my focus will be on fashion. I want to share with my fellow fashionistas my style & fashion picks. Before I begin, here is a little about me.

I am a NY native and a fashion obsessed shopaholic. I have been in love with fashion since I was able to dress myself. At four years old, my parents had to put a lock on my closet to prevent me from changing my clothes 15 times a day.

You can find me running around NYC with garment bags in hand pretty much all week long. I am a fashion intern at PR Consulting and StyleCaster. I am going to keep this post short & sweet…
